Rare black-necked cranes wintering in Yunnan’s Zhaotong
The Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve is located in Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province. It has become one of the major wintering habitats for black-necked cranes.
Wang Yuanjian, head of the resource protection department and ecotourism department of the reserve, introduced that the number of black-necked cranes wintering in Dashanbao rose from more than 300 when the reserve was established in early 1990 to more than 1,400 in 2021, accounting for one-sixth of the global population.
After the rest, the black-necked cranes are now fully refreshed, foraging and playing in the warm sun. Now, the cranes have started to fly north and are expected to complete their migration in the near future. They will fly 800 kilometers, eventually reaching the Zoige Grassland.
