44000 black-headed gulls stopover in Kunming for winter

At Huanxi bridge over the Daguan water canal, Kunming residents spent happy wintertime with black-headed gulls. According to Kunming Forestry and Grassland Bureau and Kunming Bird Association research, the number of black-headed gulls stopped over for winter in Kunming reached 44000 this year. It hit a record high in the past 34 years.

Between 2007 and 2012, the number of black-headed gulls staying in Kunming remained 30 thousand to 35 thousand. After 2013, the places that black-headed gulls inhabited and foraged increased to 29 and 75 respectively. The number has exceeded 40 thousand for the first time in 2015, and it rose steadily year by year. 2021 saw a 2400 rise in black-headed gulls compared with 2020.
