The Philippines' Department of Health on Monday said it has tallied 116 fireworks-related injuries on New Year's Eve, which brought the nationwide toll to 231 during the holiday season.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said the injured included an 11-month-old boy and a 76-year-old man, and that the latest number, culled from December 2023, "could be higher due to delays in reporting."

He said 71 percent of the victims were male, and that 93 percent of the new cases occurred at home and on the streets. Nearly half of all injuries occurred in Metro Manila.

Herbosa said 11 of those who sustained injuries needed amputation, while most of the victims suffered injuries to the fingers and the eyes
