Gunman kills police officer in southern Philippines

An unidentified gunman shot dead a male police officer in General Santos City in southern Philippines before dawn on Sunday, police said.
General Santos City Police Director Colonel Nicomedes Olaivar said the ambush happened at around 3 a.m. local time near a subdivision in the city, killing the 29-year-old off-duty police officer instantly.
Olaivar said the officer was heading home on a motorcycle, and died from three gunshot wounds in the head and body.
Police launched an investigation into the attack.
